AgileTV and SeaChange announce voice-activated search for Video-On-Demand

Cable operators can enable easy selection of programs using server-based speech recognition

AgileTV has a voice-enabled remote control for a standard cable box that uses ScanSoft network-based speech recognition at the cable head-end. They recently completed a successful trial with Comcast, searching program guides for digital channels (SRU, May 2005, p. 2). On June 7, AgileTV and SeaChange International (Nasdaq: SEAC) announced the application of the approach to Video-On-Demand (VOD). SeaChange provides digital video systems for television operators supporting on-demand services, where the viewer can select from a library of content and watch it anytime. Promptu, AgileTV’s voice activated search and navigation service, has successfully been integrated with SeaChange’s VOD system and deployed in cable systems in technical and marketing trials.

Cable operators deploying SeaChange’s VOD system with Motorola set-top boxes can now offer their customers the voice-navigation service to access the full programming line up regardless of where content is located—broadcast, On Demand, or on a Digital Video Recorder. Customers can search for their favorite programs by genre or find a specific show simply by saying the name of the program, network, actor, or sports team. David Hanson, senior vice president of business development, AgileTV, said that the integration with SeaChange marks the first time that voice navigation services have been merged with an On Demand platform.
